This paper entitled “Connected engineering: productivity, innovation and sustainability in the new digital era” provides an overview of the fourth industrial revolution, addressing aspects related to advanced digital technologies such as the Internet of Things, artificial intelligence and digital twins.
First, the author emphasizes the importance of connected engineering or Industry 4.0 as a catalyst for productivity, as a basis for addressing the challenges and opportunities it poses for engineering professionals and technical training systems.
One of the central aspects of the work is the analysis of Industry 4.0 implementation cases in manufacturing, services and public-sector companies in Colombia and Latin America, demonstrating that these technologies generate measurable improvements in productivity and sustainability. This enables reductions of up to 30% in cycle times and 20% in energy consumption in real-time monitored operations.
Additionally, examples are presented illustrating the impact of digital twins and predictive analytics, such as optimizing industrial asset maintenance and reducing unplanned downtime.
Finally, the study discusses challenges related to digital skills gaps, including the necessary organizational cultural transformation, and highlights the importance of investment in continuous training and regulatory frameworks to promote responsible digital transformation in Colombia and Latin America.
