The purpose of this research was to conduct an analysis to determine the carbon footprint as an environmental management tool for MSMEs (Micro, Small, and Medium-Sized Enterprises), identifying the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions associated with their activities. MSMEs in the telecommunications sector play a crucial role in providing communication and connectivity services at the organizational level. Therefore, like other sectors, these companies generate a significant carbon footprint derived from their activities and operations. This study also sought to identify the main sources of emissions and determine mitigation strategies.
The methodology implemented for this research focused primarily on conducting a search in recognized scientific databases, complemented by the use of Boolean operators (AND, OR, and NOT), establishing specific search criteria and characteristics to obtain more detailed and focused results, A search was conducted to identify telecommunications service providers in the city of Barrancabermeja, resulting in a total of twenty (20) companies. Subsequently, an exhaustive analysis was carried out, taking into account their current status, services offered, relationship with sustainability, and strategies related to the topic. Finally, it was concluded that although the telecommunications sector is growing rapidly and exponentially, companies have not yet adopted strategies that significantly contribute to addressing climate change. However, they have begun implementing changes in their equipment and infrastructure. This indicates the need for companies in the sector to remain at the forefront of regulatory compliance, gain access to new markets, and strengthen their commitment to sustainability.
