Abstract

The presentation From the Periodic Table to Our Lives: A Close Look at Cadmium, given by Dr. Itzel Pamela Zavala Guevara, provided a deep perspective on cadmium, a heavy metal that poses a significant risk to human health and the environment. The doctor began by explaining the nature of cadmium, highlighting its presence in soils and rocks, as well as in industrial products such as coal and mineral fertilizers.

Zavala Guevara identified the main cadmium-producing countries, with China being the global leader, followed by South Korea and Mexico in sixth place. Through her research, she emphasized the environmental and biological consequences of cadmium exposure, which binds to proteins in the human body, causing irreparable damage that can include fibrosis, kidney failure, and other serious health issues.

During her presentation, the doctor emphasized the importance of toxicology in assessing the effects of toxic substances and how cadmium exposure can vary based on dose and duration of contact. She explained that the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations sets a maximum limit of 58 micrograms of cadmium per day for a person weighing 70 kg, although studies have shown that even levels below this limit can have adverse effects on kidney health.

The presentation not only focused on the harmful effects of cadmium but also promoted awareness of self-care and the need to implement measures to reduce exposure to this metal in the environment. Dr. Zavala concluded her talk by urging attendees to adopt practices that minimize the risks associated with cadmium, highlighting that while its presence in nature cannot be completely eliminated, its effects can be mitigated through education and preve
